For our book, I chose The Mitten
by Jan Brett, which is a book we have been reading a lot this past month. (To see our other Mitten activities check out our Baby Book Club post!) For book club, I had used a silver mitten cookie cutter (mine is as old as the hills, but this one is pretty great: Wilton Comfort Grip Mitten Cookie Cutter
) to make mitten shaped sugar cookies, and I thought it would be really fun to utilize that in an art project. In the story, the mittens that Baba knits are snow whitte. I thought it would be fun to use the cookie cutters as stamps and make some white mittens!
For this project, you will need:
I set K up in his high chair with a piece of blue cardstock. Then, I dipped the metal cookie cutter in the white paint making sure to cover all of the edges. I pressed it down on the paper and demonstrated to Kingston how to make the prints. Then I handed it to him. He caught on immediately and began making prints at lightning speed.
As he created, I re-read him The Mitten. I explained to him that he was making white mittens like Baba knit for Nicki. This craft is so versatile. You could really use any cookie cutter and color. We have big plans to try this again for the next holiday season now that I know how much fun he thinks it is!
The finished product was really cool! I love the look of it!
