Farm Magnet Letter Recognition

(This post contains affiliate links. Thanks for supporting us!)

Kingston is pretty obsessed with his letters lately, so I put together this simple alphabet activity that also tied into our Farm theme using our Melissa & Doug Animal Magnets and Imaginarium Letter Magnets. I sorted out all of the farm animals and then paired them with the first letter of each of their names on a metal cookie sheet.

When I presented it to K, he was really excited to see all of his favorite animals. We started out by naming all of the animals and making the sounds. Then we pointed out and named each of the letters.

I had him repeat the letters, and I helped him to make the letter sounds and showed him how they corresponded with each of the animals. I asked him to find certain animals, then find the corresponding letter. He was really excited about it!

He did a really good job finding the animals and the letter that matched. I was really proud of him when he was able to make a match. We practiced several times, and then I removed all of the animals from the board and just left the letters.

I asked him to match the animal with the letter that it started with. I was so excited and blown away when he was able to match every animal! Apparently the repetition and practice had paid off. This was incredibly easy to set up, and we can save it to practice with for the rest of our unit.

  1. Very cute idea! I wonder if my 3 year old would enjoy this?! It would be a great one-on-one activity to do with her--- that doesn't happen so much with two others running around all day ; )

    1. Thank you! I bet she would love it! Plus, it can be as quick or as in depth as you want it to be. Also, you can put it away intact for whenever you get an extra moment! :)
