Personalized Mr. Potato Head Felt Board

This week, I created something pretty genius for Kingston. Our "All About Me" unit couldn't come at a better time, because he is really into body parts and looking at himself. He is definitely discovering who he is and his place in the world. So, to play into that and encourage more exploration in a silly way, I created this Personalized Mr. Potato Head Felt Board!

Putting it together was really quite simple. I took a photo of Kingston and enlarged the different features on it: hair, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. I didn't worry about sizing because I wanted it to be fun and silly. After printing them out, I laminated them with my magical Scotch Thermal Laminator. Then I glued a piece of black craft felt to the back of each piece and cut it out. This made for a very durable felt board piece that stuck perfectly to the piece of tan craft felt that we used as our felt board. For the piece of tan felt, I simply taped it to K's activity table. This way, we can use different colored felt backings if we want a more true to life facial color for Kingston.

K was so excited when he saw his personalized potato head. He thought it was so silly, and he got a pretty great laugh out of seeing himself. We started by identifying the different body parts. He jumped right in taking the pieces off and then putting them back together like a puzzle.

Then I had him find specific body parts. He loved this. He identified them all correctly. The best identification was definitely the "nose". When I asked him to find "his nose", he picked the piece up and brought it to his own nose. Then he proceeded to sniff away at it. It was adorable!

He had fun patting down all of the pieces... A LOT of fun!

Here he was showing off the felt backing on this piece. Really he was handing the piece to Mama, but he is an awesome blog helper!

And, as most of our activities end now, he told me he was all done and asked to go outside. Mama was happy to oblige. This little boy loves playing outside!

  1. I absolutely love this. This would be fun to also use other family members' facial parts. We live several states away from our grandson and I think it would be fun to include our faces in there too.
