15 Bird Books for Babies and Toddlers

Happy Bird Week! This week we are focusing on what else: BIRDS!

Kingston loves birds (and animals in general). Just check him (and Tanta) out at our most recent zoo trip! He is fascinated by them.

With that being said, we read lots of bird related books around here! Some of his favorite books are below as well as some books that we have on our wishlist. All of these books are great for the baby-toddler age group. Some of them are even great for the older kiddos. Here are 15 books about birds that your kids are bound to love!

One Duck Stuck: A Mucky Ducky Counting Book by Phyllis Root is SUCH a fun book. We love the sing song rhymes inside, and the fact that there are many other animals introduced throughout the book. This book incorporates both counting practice as well as a lesson on helping others and patience as duck waits in the mud for his animal friends to assist him.

Feathers for Lunch by Lois Ehlert is a book on our wishlist! This book is both a guide to birds and a storybook. I love that it introduces so many different backyard birds, and Lois Ehlert's illustrations are always wonderful! This book is great for little ones as the text is big and bold, and also for older children who would like to start identifying popular backyard birds.

Bluebird's Nest by Dorothea DePrisco is a book I've been reading with Kingston since he was a few months old. The book focuses on bird building her nest. As you read, a brown string of fuzzy yarn appears on each page until the end where you see her finished nest. On the very last page is a popup of her baby birds whom she was preparing for. This book is quick read, but combines a fun sensory experience throughout!

Penguins ABC by Kevin Schafer is one of Kingston's favorites! We read this book constantly. It is a simple alphabet book, but the pictures of phenomenal! They all depict the happenings of real life penguins. This is a great book for exposing little ones to penguins in their natural habitat.

Penguin Says "Please"  by Michael Dahl is another penguin book that is super popular over here! This book is less about penguins and more about manners, but the lesson and the illustrations are too cute. We love to read about penguin learning how to say please, and it is a definite toddler crowd "pleaser"! (Yup. Corny I know!)

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems is SUCH a cute book! I used to read these books to my preschoolers all the time when I worked in childcare. They have just enough funny that kids love them, and plenty of humor that parents will find hilarious too. Kingston has just started to get into these books, and he can't get enough. There are many books depicting this silly little pigeon and friends, so make sure you check them all out!

The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too! by Mo Willems - For the even younger set, the board book versions of the pigeon books are super cute too! We have this one, and K enjoys it. The pigeon is funny even in smaller doses!

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell is one of our must-read nighttime books. Kingston loves his "hoohoos'. I love the sweet illustrations in this book and the quality of the literature. Waddell's words just seem to roll off the tongue, and we both enjoy the sweet story of the scared owls waiting for their mother.

Are You My Mother?  by P.D. Eastman is an awesome classic bird themed tale about a little bird searching for his mother. I grew up reading this book, as I'm sure most did, so it has been fun to share it with K now. Some of the text can be a little long for younger kids, and if that's the case, we also have this Are You My Mother? Cloth Interactive book. The cloth version is PERFECT for young babies and is machine washable! It also comes with a tiny little bird that you can move from page to page.

Duck & Goose by Tad Hills is an adorable series about what else, a DUCK and a GOOSE! We have quite a few of these books and K loves them all, so make sure you hop on Amazon and check them all out. These books are all about the adventures of these two silly little birds. They will definitely make your toddler giggle. K knows some of them by heart!

In My Nest and In My Tree by Sara Gillingham are two adorable bird themed interactive books for little ones. We have a few of these books, and they are SO cute. The center fabric puppet follows you throughout the book as you read through the beautifully illustrated die cut pages. These books are awesome for young infants and toddlers!

Bring on the Birds by Susan Stockdale is a gorgeous book depicting some beautiful illustrations of both common and unique birds in their natural habitats. If you are looking for a book to accurately introduce your little ones to birds, this is a great choice. Adults won't mind reading this book over and over with the charming illustrations!

Bird Color (Adventure Boardbook) by Alison Hill Spencer is a gorgeous book for toddlers about birds AND colors! The colors and illustrations depicted on each page are beautiful and are sure to capture your little ones attention as you teach them about different colors.

Busy Birdies (A Busy Book) by John Schindel is just one in a series of AWESOME books. If you have a toddler and haven't checked out the "Busy Book" series, then you are missing out! We own quite a few of these titles and LOVE them. They all depict real life pictures of the animals they are about. The pictures of birds in this book are absolutely gorgeous. The text walks you through what the different birds are doing. We love this book.
