Painting Rainbows with Gold Coins

(Affiliate links included for your convenience!)

Happy Fine Motor Fridays! With St. Patrick's Day quickly approaching, we have been hard at work making rainbows with just about everything and anything. Last FMF you saw our post on Painting Rainbows with Combs, well today we are painting with plastic gold coins!

I set out a paper plate filled with washable fingerpaint in rainbow colors and dipped the plastic gold coins in the paint. Kingston and I talked about the different colors in the rainbow, and then I encouraged him to make his own rainbows using the coins.

Making the lines for the rainbows was a fantastic fine motor exercise and helped build pre-writing skills. We have been working on making lines a lot lately, so this was a great way to encourage that with an unconventional material.

Once he got going with the painting, the coins became slippery. Keeping a grip on them became another great fine motor exercise as he tried to continue to make rainbows and designs using the coins. I love the vibrant rainbow colors! We even tried a bit of color mixing with our coins.

Look at my sweet little leprechaun rocking his headband! He is such a trooper when it comes to Mama's silly wishes.
