This month was the color red (for obvious Valentine-y reasons). We did some red activities this week also. Kingston had his first official experience with one to one correspondence. At first he tried to stuff a bunch into each compartment, but once I explained to him that only one pom pom could go in each compartment he caught on quickly. He was really into it. We talked about the color red, the circular shape of the pom poms, and that they looked like balloons. As Kingston dropped each pom pom in we counted them, then he would dumped them out and start again. He did this for so long that I had to refrain myself from moving him onto the next activity! These came in a pack of all different colors from the Dollar Tree. They were an awesome find! K examined each shape and we talked about what they were. We played with them until K started breaking out into a rash, and I quickly realized that he seems to unfortunately have a latex allergy. After that we had to discontinue any use of latex balloons throughout the rest of the week which did cancel out a few of our activities. They are mess-free, help to develop fine motor skills, and are a phenomenal sensory experience. For this craft, Kingston got to do two contact paper crafts in one. The first thing he did was make the hot air balloon basket. I LOVED playing with paper dolls as a child, and this was just like a little laminated paper doll. The possibilities are endless. It sparked the desire to make the hot air balloon more child friendly. Generally he isn't very involved in print crafts. He holds out his hand or foot and I go about making something lovely with them. But now that he is older, he was very into it. He helped me pick colors, told me which colors he wanted to use when, and helped to press his thumb down on the page. I can't stop looking at them. After we did our thumbprint craft, I kept brainstorming what other body parts we could print to make a circle. Then it hit me, the palm! We started off with the first balloon and some blue paint. Kingston loved that it was small enough to fit in his hands. Kingston laughed and clapped, and I said \"THE BALLOON POPPED\" Kingston said \"BOON POP!\" So for us, this was a great language building activity. Once he was fixed up with the next balloon, we began noticing that different shaped balloons made different kinds of prints. The paint on the slippery balloon was difficult to hold onto (perfect for developing fine motor skills) and several times it slipped out of K's hands. There was paint everywhere, and we were hysterical! He had paint all over him, and so did I. My walls, floors, and furniture did too. Be aware that this is not for those who shy away from a mess.
