Kingston has been right alongside me as I planted all of the seeds for our garden this year. We have a square foot garden, so I simply put the seeds (especially the larger seeds like beans) on top of the surface in the proper configuration and let him poke them into the ground. I explain to him exactly what we are planting, and he gets the hands on experience of planting the seeds himself and connecting them to the names of the food that we eat. If you don't have a garden, plant some seeds indoors. We save our seeds from year to year, and although most of them last far longer than their packaging date, some have stopped sprouting. We save the ones that have stopped sprouting specifically for sensory and exploratory purposes! I took all of our \"duds\" and popped them in this little dish for K to look at and touch. As he scooped and felt the different seeds, I explained to him what they were. We managed to pick the majority of them up with that (the rest I vaccummed with my handheld!). I taped some contact paper down, sticky side up, and provided K with a bunch of vibrantly colored Easter grass. Of course, the first thing he had to do was test the stickiness of the contact paper out. For all of the contact paper crafts we have done (literally since he was about 5 months old), he STILL does this every time! They are mess-free, help to develop fine motor skills, and are a phenomenal sensory experience. For this craft, Kingston got to do two contact paper crafts in one. The first thing he did was make the hot air balloon basket. I covered the tops of the contact paper creations with more contact paper sealing them in. Then came the best part, I printed out a full body shot of Kingston and ran in through the laminator creating a tiny laminated K!\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\nTo finish the rest of the project, I cut the balloon collage and basket collage into the aforementioned shapes. Then I punched two holes in the bottom of the balloon and two holes in the top of the basket and tied brown yarn to attach the two.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\nSide Note: The little K is seriously adorable. I LOVED playing with paper dolls as a child, and this was just like a little laminated paper doll. The possibilities are endless. It sparked the desire to make the hot air balloon more child friendly. So that Kingston could actually play with the hot air balloon and the mini Kingston, I ran the contact paper projects through the laminator as well! This made them super sturdy and flat.
